Using the Multiplication Tool

The Multiplication Tool is designed to be used in a variety of school, class and home contexts. It can be accessed through any standard web browser, including Internet Explorer 7+, Firefox and Safari (on the Mac and PC).

To get started, you may either use the problem that is displayed when the interface loads, generate a problem, or set a new difficulty level (which also generates a new problem for you).

Then, select the solving method you would like to use. You can begin with one solving method, Standard, for example, and then switch to another, such as Lattice, to complete the problem.

To solve the problem, drag number pieces from the pad to the board. You can drag numbers to the answer squares which correspond with the items you need to solve for in the solving method, or you can drag numbers to the carrying bar (which you are not required to use).

If you would like to undo a piece, click undo. If you want to remove a piece, you can drag it to the trash bin or, if you want to clear the board, simply click Clear.

Standard Features:

  • Solve problems in one of three solving methods
  • Switchable between solving methods within problems
  • Generate problems

Options Menu:

  • Select whether you would like hints or not
  • Select whether you would like to have an increasing difficulty level or not
  • Select the difficulty level, which corresponds to:
    1. Numbers that people typically memorize (up to 12 x 12)
    2. Multiple digits that don't require carrying / renaming in multiplying
    3. Use of Zeros
    4. Longer numbers
    5. Much longer numbers
